How to Setup SFTP Server on Ubuntu 24.04

To setup an SFTP server on Ubuntu 24.04, follow the steps below:

Step 1 : Update System Packages.

sudo apt update

Step 2 : Install openssh-server if not already installed.

sudo apt install openssh-server

Step 3 : Open sshd_config and add SFTP configuration.

sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config

Add or uncomment the following lines:

Subsystem sftp internal-sftp

Match Group sftp
        ChrootDirectory %h
        X11Forwarding no
        AllowTcpForwarding no
        ForceCommand internal-sftp

Step 4 : Restart ssh.

sudo systemctl restart ssh

sudo groupadd sftp

sudo mkdir /home/sftpuser/upload
sudo chown sftpuser:sftpuser /home/sftpuser/upload
sudo chmod 755 /home/sftpuser/upload

Step 9 : Allow traffic through UFW if enabled.

sudo ufw allow OpenSSH

Step 10 : If you want to enable password login, configure sftp

sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config

Ensure the following line is uncommented:

PasswordAuthentication yes

Step 11 : Restart SSH Service.

sudo systemctl restart ssh

Step 12 : Test Connection.

- Open your SFTP client (e.g., FileZilla).

- Add a new site

- Configure the settings:

  • Host: Your server's IP address
  • Port: 22
  • Protocol: SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol
  • Logon Type: Normal
  • User: Your SFTP username
  • Password: Your SFTP user's password

- Connect
